Clari III| The Unseen Shoot!

I have so many files on my hard drive that I forget what I have or have not blogged about. Well this past week, one of my friends had a birthday and I remembered that I never posted one of our last creative shoots together while in MA. Unlike session 1 and session 2 this session was done in the winter so not only was my creativity challenged but I had to trudge through freezing hands and falling snow. Here are the unseen files!

My lil angel turned 3 months old last week!! So I deciding to give her a mini shoot. But the poor thing was getting over a cold and I also think she's teething, yes I said teething. She has all the symptoms; drooling, fussiness, irritability, gums look swollen and biting behavior. I was going to do it another day but then again I didn't want to let a sunny day like this go by (since it has been so cold). And I also didn't want to let time slip me by, the next thing I know she will be 6 months... So here are a few pics, sorry no smiles during this shoot (although she did crack a smile after I was done lol), she was a bit lethargic.

So I'm sitting here looking at my blog wondering what my next post should be... and I realize that I have TONS of images that I have personally taken for myself, friends or family members that I can share. Some of these images were taken during the pregnancy and others, well lets just say I have done a lot of test shooting throughout the years and things catch my eye. So while I am still settling in to motherhood I thought it be a good idea to post some of them from time to time, to share my love of photography along with keeping my blog current.

These two images are of my teenage cousin (thanks Jocelyn!). I used her as a subject this past summer during my last trimester of pregnancy. It was a challenge to try and get low with my belly. It was also very tiring. I felt exhausted after thirty minutes of just moving around and holding my camera.

Photography was not my initial interest (I know can you believe it?). In fact I actually did graphic design work and web design before my passion was sparked. I didn't realize how much my previous experience would help expand my business. At the beginning of my photography career, I mostly shot children, families and seniors. But then as my clientele grew I had the opportunity to work in other areas of photography (i.e. models, artists, etc.)

Gallery Exhibition | Dominican Republic Part 1

If you read my previous post then you should already know where this post is headed. I have started to look through my folders from my various trips to my homeland and there are so many images to choose from. I am trying to stick with a black and white theme but I don't think thats going to work out, there are certain images that need to be in color in order to really tell the story (kwim?). I also won't be posting all the images I've chosen (I mean then there'd be nothing left to show at the exibition ;)), instead I will only share a few from both sets (color and black and white).

Since I'm on a hiatus, aka motherhood (well just until I get adjusted to life with my new little one) I figured that I may not be able to book any sessions at this moment, but I can work on personal projects as well as taking portraits of different objects around the house or outside to keep me 'eye' intact. One of my personal projects (I have so many and since my brain never stops, the list keeps getting longer) is a tribute to my homeland. I have gone to visit practically every summer since I can remember and now that I'm older I can really appreciate the culture and scenery. In the last couple of years I have taken many portraits and have been saving them for this one idea... should I share... hmmm. Who knows if this dream of mine will come true. Here it goes.

I've always wanted to have my very own gallery exhibition! Yes, who wouldn't? I envisioned my very first one (oh yes I think at least two of them would be nice, lol) I'd have a theme, maybe black and whites portraits of people, place, and things from my homeland. Dominican Republic. That's pretty much it in nutshell. So what I will do in the mean time is choose the images that speak to me and work my 'Essynce Touch', lol. I may post some from time to time or all at once, still haven't decided. But as I post them I would love your feedback, I want to make sure that the portraits that I choose have something to say. :)

It's so surreal... I'm usually shooting and posting pics of someone else's baby and now I am blessed to share some of my own lil angel. It's been a long time coming. God only knows... After losing my first child, Zaiyah, photography truly became my outlet and passion. It was my therapy and definitely a way to heal. Now today, 2011, I have been given the chance to combine both. My talent (def God's gift) and my hearts desire (my daughter). I want to thank everyone who has been a part of this journey. And to those who have or havent yet met my JOURNEE, here she is :)

Its been tough recovering and getting adjusted to motherhood, but my photography instincts are a bit more keen and polished lol. So I did manage to shoot my baby girl.

It's been so exciting to take pics of my growing belly during this time and as a photographer you have tons of ideas going through your head, but a)I can't shoot myself and b) I could actually shoot myself if I knew where my remote was, hmmm. Any who it helps to have talented people in your life, especially when my goal was to have three different sessions and the last one at my peek (aka the big belly). The first two previous session were a joint effort between myself and my cousin Mel. And now for this last one it all came together for me and my cousin/stylist Kani, thanks to our combined vision. The whole concept is very dear and personal to me. It totally embodies what life obstacles I've gone through to finally reach this point in my journey. I am truly grateful and SO thankful that God has blessed me with such an opportunity.

Baby #2| Canon has a little sister

Well if you haven't noticed, I haven't been blogging on a regular basis lately. I haven't been on the "photography scene" as much as I would like to. No, not because business is slow, on the contrary I wish I could take all the projects and sessions that I have been requested to do. However, the reason for my absence is that I will soon have to stop calling my canon camera 'my baby' since I will be having a lil bundle of joy next month (its a girl)!! I am so excited and have been so consumed and exhausted with pregnancy and all its changes that I don't have the time nor the energy to focus on my business as I would like to. I have done a few sessions (but its not the same trying to get on the ground or stand up high with a belly in front of you, lol) and I have also done some practice shooting so I don't lose my mojo.

I would like to share a few shots of me carrying my bowling ball of joy :) Enjoy!

2010 | Year in Review

Ok so I've had this post waiting for me to publish it, but technical difficulties and hectic time schedules prevented me from showing them at the time I had originally had planned.

2010 was a very productive and challenging year. After relocating I felt that it would be difficult for me to continue with my passion in a new state. But thank God, I was able to pick up where I left off. I was able to branch out and tailor my work according my new surroundings and effectively continue business.
I planned to close out this year with a simple thank you, but with the holiday, a new job schedule and being under the weather I was not able to reach everyone individually. So instead I put together this thank you slide for all of my clients, family and friends for making 2010 a great year. Thank you for allowing me to capture your essence!

By now you should know that I get super excited when I book a Senior session. Why do you ask? Well I think it's because my high school years and especially my senior year are the most vivid and cherished memories of my youth. It could also be because I'm a high school teacher and I identify with this age group. With that being said, I also love it when a Senior feels comfortable around me even with a big ole camera in their face yet they are themselves from beginning to end. Miss Shaveda did just that. I think I overshot her since I had so much fun and couldnt stop myself and to top it off her and her mother allowed me to choose the venue. I was dying to try my rustic and grunge locations! I hope you enjoy the portraits as much as I enjoyed taking them.

One of my major avenues that has helped expand my photography business is word of mouth. I really love it when I get referrals, especially family members of previous clients. This type of marketing has really helped establish and strengthen my business. It lets me know that the clients I have shot are really happy with my work. And value it enough to recommend me to their loved ones.

Ms Erica is one of those family referrals. I had a great time shooting her as well as scouting out a location. She trusted my suggestions and took great direction when posing. She definitely wasn't afraid to try something new or get dirty, lol.

Pieces of Me | 30 Day Journal Project

It feels as if I have 101 projects on my plate. And I've noticed that there all for other people. It seems that my projects always get put on the shelf. I don't have any ME time. So one of my great photographer friends, Hi VAL :) decided to do this great idea/project. We will both be doing it for the month of November. It's a 30 day documentary on our lives through pictures. It will work as my personal project and as I go through this journey I'll be sure to share some of the pages so that you can follow along with me as well as give you a little more insight about me. At the end of the thirty days, Valerie and I will make the photo pages into a mini book. I am really bad with printing my own pictures be it family and friends, then I wonder why everyone is upset with since they haven't seen pictures that I've taken of them years ago. LOL. So this is a great way to start shooting and printing. You can check out my girl Valerie's website and blog. I am very blessed to have her in my life (although we have never met in person) our five years of online friendship has proved to be a great one. We motivate and support each others businesses. She's a great photographer and friend. Love you girl!!

Essynce Meets The Country : Alyssa : Sneak Peek | Senior Portraits

Another Senior! I was asked to photograph Alyssa at The Nature Center. I like to Google my locations before hand when a client chooses it especially if I am unfamiliar with it. I immediately knew that this was going to be a great session. The location was well chosen and it really fit Alyssa's personality. Anytime I shoot a senior, they usually seem shy during the first outfit, but by the last outfit they become so comfortable being in front of the camera that I am able to really capture who they are. Alyssa definitely demonstrated that when she took the initiative of coming up with her own poses. I was so impressed that she wasn't afraid to try something outside her comfort zone.

This is my second time shooting Emmanuella. The first time I shot her was during a fitness studio session to promote her business as a pilates instructor. But this time it was her birthday shoot! Let me get my sleepy time tea and I will be right back...

Ok, I'm back. I know its late and Tuesday soon will become Wednesday, but I guess I work best at night. I've noticed since I've been here in Tennessee, besides the obvious that I'm in the south now, is the difference in locations. Being upstate I was surrounded by lots of buildings, abandoned houses, alley ways, graffiti walls and trains, etc. But not here. The scenery is so different. It's a lot prettier, that may not be the exact word I'm looking for. Its not as grungy which is what I'm used to. There's a lot more nature filled settings and I like that. I've been shooting in environments that are not the norm for me but I've been making it work. I love the challenge of something new and I look forward to discovering more locations and places to shoot.

We're unpacking our equipment and breaking it in in a new city! New starts can be difficult sometimes but this senior made it so easy to "setting up shop." The location and session fell right into place. It really shows me that despite having a well thought out plan, a beautiful setting, that the subject really makes the photography. And this subject did just that. Antonio is not only a senior this year but he is also Essynce Photography's Senior Rep for the Hamilton County area. He has a great personality, very talented and a FABULOUS sense of fashion. He made my first senior shoot in TN a success! I'm looking forward to capturing many more.

I'm finally getting settled in. It's not easy being in a new environment, especially not having your friends and family close by. It's going well and better than I expected, although I do get homesick from time to time. So many new projects and ideas for Essynce as well as other personal interests. I've been wanting to enhance my blog for a while now and also get better at blogging period. Several months ago I came across a photography blog and I was inspired not only by her (Kara Layne) images but by the content of her blog. One of the things she did that caught my eye were entries "Happiness Is". Very simple but so meaningful. They are blog entries that showcase photographs of things or people that make our life happy. This week I was fortunate and honored to do an artist shoot with my friend (which I consider fam) Vennard. Not only does he have a great face to photograph but he also has a voice to match. He is currently working on his first single (which I love and can't get that song out of my head). I was also able to work on my indoor lighting skills (so many possibilities!) during the shoot and use many of the images as we worked on his new site!

Changes| Relocating...

I have been on vacation to my home land Dominican Republic (I have so many pics to post from my trip!), that's why I have neglected my blog :( While I've been gone many changes have transpired. God has blessed me in the past years in relation to my life and especially in my passion of photography. I have grown and done things that I would have never imagined doing. I have met people and have had the privelage in capturing so many beautiful faces. I have grown as a photographer and my business has taken on a life of its own. Its progressing and moving forward. I told myself I wouldnt cry... lol. 10 years... college, friends, marriage, family, work and business. So many memories and I have them all captured in a photograph. Now its time for a leap of faith and room to grow. I and Essynce Photography will be relocating to a new state. I will be booking sessions from July 26th til Aug 15th only. I thank all my past and future clients for giving me the opportunity to share my talents. I truly have enjoyed this journey. I will take my expericences and captured essence's with me. Be Blessed...

Facebook is doing its thing! I was contacted by this young man to book a session for family portraits. When I asked how he heard about Essynce Photography, he said he saw images of a mutual friend through facebook. That was pretty impressive, but not as impressive as this family. Not only was this young man graduating from college that weekend, but his family came from out of stated to attend and have their images captured by me. I was very honored to shoot such a loving and fun family. They were dressed to impress and they even chose the location!

I finally got to meet lil Jojo. I didn't quite make the baby dedication (was running a bit late). But I was able to spend some time with him, mom and uncle. Made it up to him with a mini shoot :) He's such a happy baby, 4 months and teething. We couldn't quite get his hands out of his mouth.

{monday musings}

So anyone who really knows me, knows that I am not a fan of artificial lighting. I am 100% in love with natural lighting! One of God's first creations, LIGHT! :) But I also know that as a photographer I want to grow and learn other techniques as well. So last week my assistant/mentee practiced taking shots of each other with window lighting, then using umbrella lights. I picked up a little something and also realized that I didn't have to use flash (did I mention that I am not a fan of flash) if the setting was bright enough. Well a while back my dad made me a homemade soft box which I intend to use for practice until I am comfortable enough and have the space to purchase strobes. With all this said. I actually practiced a little more 2 days later on Clari (Essynce Model) and here are some of the shots. *fingers crossed* :p

Hello pround parents! Here is the sneak peek that was promised. This was one of my toughest sessions to date. Why? Because I'm so used to shooting teenagers. lol. I didn't realize how patient you have to be when dealing with babies. But it was worth it. I thank God that I was able to capture Nah's first weeks :). Thanks mom and dad for letting me put her in suitcase. LOL.

I love this month! March is my favorite month. Why? Because many of my friends and families share birthdays this month. And MY birthday is the 8th!! Ever since I can remember my dad would always take pics of me and my sibilings birthdays. He would always pull out his well kept 35mm canon that no one but him could touch. My dad has thousands of pictures and albums and he passed that on to me. I carry this tradition over onto my special day. Some like cake, others like gifts or partys. I LOVE photoshoots. Its the time of the year where I can dress up and be infront of the camera. I usually have my husband or my photographer friend do the shoot. But this year, I tried something different. A friend and family member were "nominated" to photograph me. One was my 10yr old cousin (who's been modeling for Essynce since she was like 4) the other is my friend Clari (from my previous blog post). I of course had the fun part of playing around and editing them. ;)

This is one of 3 sessions that I've had the pleasure to do with miss clari. Not only is she an artist (member of the group SIC - Sisters In Christ), she also plays the bass (how cool is that!), she is one of Essynce's Models and a good friend of mine.:) Its always fun and unpredicatable to shoot clari since most of our ideas come out of the blue. Or if I ask for her to think of a theme and she pulls it together 5 minutes before the session. LOL... creativity always flows.

Baby Nah'yeem is truly a miracle! I am so honored and blessed to have been able to witness and be part of her arrival. One if my very good friends (her mom) and I have been through a lot these past couple of years and we have truly seen God work in our lives. We've both experienced losses in the past but have gained strength and hope that miracles do happen. I was in awe to see her little feet and hands, i truly shared in the joy that both mom and dad exuded as they held their first baby girl. I can't wait for our first shoot!

Yes, I know. Shame on me. I have not had the time to update my poor blog. So many projects and sessions in 2009. I can't believe I didn't even get a chance to post a 2009 wrap up of photos! But I am still trying to, to thank all my clients who kept me busy in 2009 :)

Happy New Year is in order (lol, yes I know its Feb). Up to this point I've had several sessions which I haven't had the time to blog as of yet. So I would like to share one of them now.
